An apology

Hello faithful followers and search engine seekers,

I just wanted to apologize for the lack of upkeep on the blog. Fountains of Youth was created for a class, and now that the class is over, we have yet to decide how to continue.

With all the craziness that is spring semester, don’t expect much—but come summer, I hope to revamp and reopen the Fountains.

Thanks for your patience.

Fall favorites of my youth

By Brittany Howard

When I was young, I absolutely loved fall. I always looked forward to the leaves, mom buying me a new fluffy coat, preparing for Halloween, and then awaiting the snow. But I definitely had my favorites, as I’m sure everyone did. The following are my top three fall favorites from my youth years in which I intend to keep up with every season.

1. Helping mom make fudge

My mother is an expert chocolate and peanut butter fudge maker. She makes it every fall, mostly for her associates at work, but all I ever cared about was helping her.. so I could lick the spoon.

One of my previous winning carvings. Patrick Star!

2. Pumpkin carving

It’s almost Halloween, so of course I’m going to mention pumpkin carving. It really was, and still is one of my favorites. It always involved the whole family. Mom would help us pick out ideas online to print out. Dad would use his tools to help us get started, and thoroughly clean out the pumpkin insides because me and my sisters never did it properly, according to him. Then we would all stand around the kitchen bar and carve our pumpkins. It was always a contest; who had the best design. In the picture, one of my previous pumpkin carvings, I was the winner that year. (obviously!)

3. Scary movie marathons

My family always took advantage of ABC Family’s 13 Nights of Halloween. We would pile up in the living room, popcorn and all, with pillows at hand to hide behind if necessary. In the early years, it was movies like Casper and Scooby Doo, but now days, we have Scream and Nightmare on Elm Street. I still prefer the not-so-scary Halloween favorites that you can find a list of here.

It’s ok. I’m friends with the band.

By Courtney LeMay

There are few things that can make me squeal with excitement like a little girl. One of these things is a good band…like this one! Novas Effect is an up-and-coming rock group from my hometown of Lexington, Ky., and I think they’ve got some talent. I also think I have some bias, so maybe you should make the call for yourself…

If you like what you hear, the full remix EP is available this November. If you can’t wait that long, their “Controlled Chaos” EP is available here.

My second 2nd Sunday of running

Swimming has been my exercise of choice for some time now, but last weekend I tried my hand at running a 6K, despite great apprehension. I ran my first 5K in September with less than optimal results (ok, my time may have been good at the end of the race, but my stomach was not. Things got ugly quickly.)

This Sunday, however, was different. Part of a statewide event with an emphasis on increasing physical activity in Kentucky communities called 2nd Sunday, the third-annual “6K Run for Ralph and Ryan” is Jessamine County’s event. It was my second time participating, but my first time actually running—in 2009 I mostly walked.

2nd Sunday is the only statewide program of its kind in the United States. The idea came from a practice in Bogota, Columbia, where more than 70 miles of road are closed each Sunday for the convenience of exercising pedestrians. In Kentucky, this happens on a much smaller scale: although Lexington hosts a monthly 2nd Sunday event, the statewide event remains on the second Sunday of October. The vision of 2nd Sunday is to fight obesity by closing roads to vehicles and opening up new opportunities for exercising. 107 of Kentucky’s 120 counties participated in this year’s initiative.

Being young can be yummy

By Brittany Howard

In my opinion, feeling young doesn’t always mean you have to eat healthy. When I was young, me and my dad’s favorite ice cream to eat was Moose Tracks. We would always race to count who had the most peanut butter cups in their bowl. I always seemed to lose. So I challenge you to take a night of splurging with a friend and share some ice cream; maybe Moose Tracks, or you could try one of the many tasty flavors of Ben & Jerry’s.

Healthy Fast Food Meals Do Exist?

By Brittany Howard

It is quite obvious that fast food restaurants are taking over the world. Maybe not literally, but admit it, they’re taking over your not so good eating habits. Everywhere you look, it is not hard to see those golden arches, or one of the many glowing pizza company signs. Most fast food restaurants, like Taco Bell for example, are open even later at night to help those in need of fulfilling their “fourth meal”. So, like many others, you struggle to maintain a healthy diet while being hip, social or just hungry by going to fast food restaurants. To help you out, here is a list of some of the most popular fast food restaurants in the business and their healthiest items on the menu.

An overflowing welcome

By Courtney LeMay

Welcome to the Fountains of Youth, a blog started for a journalism class at Asbury University with a passion for living a more enjoyable life through childlike fun.

This vision takes shape in a number of different ways. From ideas on having a more youthful outlook by stepping outside of your comfort zone to ways to feel younger by eating better and exercising more effectively, we cannot wait to share our perspectives with you.

As a reader, you can expect multiple updates on a weekly basis, discussing a variety of topics intended to get you actively thinking about ways to live life to the fullest. My favorite topic? Embracing the innocent wonder we had as children—perhaps through re-experiencing memories from your childhood or otherwise expanding your imagination, such as playing with tiny dinosaurs at Lynn’s Paradise Café (in Louisville, Ky., pictured below).

So go ahead; jump into the Fountains—and start living life!
