Fall favorites of my youth

By Brittany Howard

When I was young, I absolutely loved fall. I always looked forward to the leaves, mom buying me a new fluffy coat, preparing for Halloween, and then awaiting the snow. But I definitely had my favorites, as I’m sure everyone did. The following are my top three fall favorites from my youth years in which I intend to keep up with every season.

1. Helping mom make fudge

My mother is an expert chocolate and peanut butter fudge maker. She makes it every fall, mostly for her associates at work, but all I ever cared about was helping her.. so I could lick the spoon.

One of my previous winning carvings. Patrick Star!

2. Pumpkin carving

It’s almost Halloween, so of course I’m going to mention pumpkin carving. It really was, and still is one of my favorites. It always involved the whole family. Mom would help us pick out ideas online to print out. Dad would use his tools to help us get started, and thoroughly clean out the pumpkin insides because me and my sisters never did it properly, according to him. Then we would all stand around the kitchen bar and carve our pumpkins. It was always a contest; who had the best design. In the picture, one of my previous pumpkin carvings, I was the winner that year. (obviously!)

3. Scary movie marathons

My family always took advantage of ABC Family’s 13 Nights of Halloween. We would pile up in the living room, popcorn and all, with pillows at hand to hide behind if necessary. In the early years, it was movies like Casper and Scooby Doo, but now days, we have Scream and Nightmare on Elm Street. I still prefer the not-so-scary Halloween favorites that you can find a list of here.
